Converting a grid street light to solar is feasible where the site can support the required lighting, PV generation, storage and mounting arrangement. Reusing a pole or replacing its lamp does not establish feasibility. Assess each location against the same service requirement as the existing or proposed road lighting.

Survey sunlight and reusable infrastructure

Record coordinates, buildings, trees, terrain, available panel orientation and seasonal shade. Inspect existing poles, brackets, foundations and access. Adding a PV panel changes wind area and loading; a structural review must cover the complete new assembly.

Have the responsible qualified personnel assess existing electrical equipment and the proposed isolation or retention plan. Keep any grid backup arrangement explicit in the design and handover documentation.

Verify lighting before sizing the energy system

Use the actual road geometry and exact luminaire/optic photometry to check the applicable lighting requirements. If dimming is proposed, verify each operating stage. A project cannot simply lower the required lighting class to make a smaller solar kit appear sufficient; changes require the appropriate project review and approval.

Feasibility check Required result
Solar access Documented design-season generation and shade assessment
Lighting Verified maintained performance and accepted schedule
Storage Usable energy for the defined reserve and temperatures
Recharge Recovery after the agreed low-generation scenario
Structure Verified panel, battery, pole, fixings and foundation
Maintenance Safe access, identified spares and replacement plan

Calculate consumption, reserve and recovery

Sum measured power multiplied by hours for every lighting stage and auxiliary device. Convert nominal battery voltage and Ah to Wh, then account for allowable discharge, efficiency, temperature and ageing. Define whether reserve means no PV generation or operation with residual cloudy-weather generation.

Size the panel using site-season yield and consistent losses. Daily balance alone is insufficient if a depleted battery must recover within a stated period. Specify that recovery requirement rather than applying a universal PV-to-LED watt ratio.

Compare alternatives and trial a representative section

Compare full solar conversion, retaining an improved grid system and a specifically designed hybrid system. A hybrid option can change storage needs only when the grid service, backup duration and source-transfer behaviour are defined. It does not automatically guarantee continuity.

Use the same lighting brief and cost period for installation, civil work, electricity, cleaning and component replacements. Trial a representative location, including a difficult shade or exposure condition where relevant. Accept the configuration using documented lighting, energy and operating checks before expanding.

Frequently asked questions

Can the existing pole always be reused?

No. Its condition, complete new loads, connections and foundation must be checked for the proposed assembly and site.

Can solar conversion be made feasible by reducing light output?

Only an approved operating brief can establish acceptable output. Verify the applicable lighting requirements rather than lowering service solely to fit the energy system.

Does a hybrid design always need less battery capacity?

Not automatically. Capacity depends on the defined grid availability, backup service, load and transfer arrangement.
