Quick answer

A solar-grid hybrid adds grid-side electrical work and a defined control strategy. The difference can be modest where a suitable connection already exists, or substantial where a new feeder, excavation or road reinstatement is required. Compare the actual scope before judging installation effort. Pole erection is only one part of the project.

1. Start with the grid connection

Site condition Extra scope to assess
Existing approved supply nearby Cable route, spare capacity, voltage, protection and ownership
New feeder required Excavation, crossings, road reinstatement, cable sizing and utility coordination
Intermittent grid Outage reserve, voltage conditions and reliable fallback behaviour
No practical grid Off-grid sizing or an independently justified alternative source

Distance to a usable supply, trench conditions, permits and reinstatement can dominate labour and cost. Do not assume hybrid civil works are always similar to standalone solar.

2. Separate two hybrid architectures

An AC charger feeding the battery/DC system differs from switching the luminaire between independent supplies. Document the actual power path, source priorities, voltage compatibility and fault isolation. Transfer equipment is not automatically required in every charger-based design, and AC charging is not automatically included in every hybrid-labelled product.

Specify what happens at low battery, loss of PV, loss of grid, reconnection and controller failure. Do not assume export to the utility or grid-parallel operation unless designed and approved for that purpose.

3. Compare installation tasks

Task Standalone solar Solar-grid hybrid
Lighting and structural design Site-specific Site-specific; include added equipment
PV and battery wiring Required Required for the specified energy path
AC feeder and protection No grid feeder Defined by the connection design
Approvals and inspections Applicable local works requirements Also applicable supply and electrical requirements
Commissioning Load, charge and protection Also AC path, priorities and outage behaviour
Maintenance PV, battery, structure and controls Also AC equipment and supply coordination

Pure solar still needs competent electrical work, battery safety, protection and structural inspection. DC operation does not remove these responsibilities. The exact requirements and responsible parties are set by the local project.

4. Keep continuity and sizing consistent

A stable grid may permit less battery reserve, but confirm the required lighting duration during grid outages. Do not reduce storage just because the system is called hybrid. Use the real nightly profile, battery limits and worst relevant weather/outage scenarios.

As a comparison example, a 355 Wh nightly load needs about 986 Wh nominal battery energy for two nights at 80% DoD and 90% battery-to-load efficiency, before reserves. A shorter outage requirement changes that calculation; it does not change the battery manufacturer’s safe limits.

5. Commission and hand over

  • Approved diagrams, cable routes, protection and earthing arrangement as applicable.
  • Check supply limits and equipment identification before energising.
  • Test low-battery events, AC charging or transfer, outage and restoration.
  • Confirm local lighting operation when monitoring is unavailable.
  • Record settings, inspection results, maintenance roles and warranty scope.

6. Compare full cost and responsibility

Request equipment, feeder/civil works, approval, testing, energy and maintenance as separate lines. Neither pure solar nor grid LED is universally cheapest. Clarify who performs and pays for connection work, inspection, faults and spare parts. Five-year system warranty wording must not be assumed to cover utility works or every AC component without confirmation.

7. FAQ

Is hybrid only slightly harder to install?

Only in some sites with an existing suitable supply. New cabling, excavation, crossings and approval may make the difference large.

Can the same pole be reused?

Only after the actual equipment loads, routing, geometry and foundation are checked.

What should the supplier confirm?

The power architecture, control sequence, wiring and protection documents, connection scope, commissioning criteria and written commercial responsibilities.
