Quick answer

Hybrid lighting can help during extended low solar production if an available grid and verified control strategy supply the shortfall. It is not automatically preferable to a properly sized standalone system. Decide using seasonal energy, outage exposure, installation cost and the required lighting service.

1. Define the rainy-season design case

  • Nightly load and dimming levels that still meet the lighting requirement.
  • Worst relevant monthly irradiation, orientation, shading and losses.
  • Consecutive low-generation days and the required recovery time.
  • Grid availability, outages, tariffs and physical connection scope.
  • Moisture, drainage, condensation, corrosion and maintenance access.

2. Worked daily energy balance

Assume a 355 Wh daily load, a 200 Wp panel, two equivalent peak sun hours and an illustrative PV-to-load factor of 0.75. Estimated solar energy reaching the load is 200 × 2 × 0.75 = 300 Wh/day, leaving 55 Wh/day.

Item Illustrative daily energy
Lighting load 355 Wh
PV contribution at the stated conditions 300 Wh
Uncovered energy 55 Wh
Grid energy if grid-to-load path efficiency is 85% 55 ÷ 0.85 ≈ 65 Wh

This is a simplified daily comparison, not a weather simulation or a rated MCL configuration. The 85% figure is an assumption for the complete AC-to-load path; actual architecture and efficiency must be confirmed. Battery timing, temperature, standby and recharge deficits may change the result.

3. Specify the actual backup path

Grid backup may power an AC charger for the DC system, supply the luminaire through a separate path, or use another designed arrangement. State source priority, thresholds, charging limits, scheduling and restoration behaviour. Verify battery reserve for grid outages rather than assuming backup is always present.

If a battery is deeply depleted after several cloudy days, daily balance alone does not restore it. Include additional recovery energy and available charging hours without violating cell temperature or current limits.

4. Weather protection is a separate check

Confirm IP rating scope, glands, connectors, drainage and condensation measures for the selected components. Rainfall does not quantify PV energy, and a high IP number does not prove corrosion resistance. Coastal sites need material and coating compatibility as well as site-specific wind and foundation design.

5. Compare architectures on one basis

Option Useful when Required check
Standalone solar Grid unavailable or uneconomic Full seasonal load, storage and recovery
Solar-grid hybrid Suitable supply can cover deficits AC path, outages, cost and verified control
Grid-only LED Existing reliable grid and suitable project objective Outage consequences and lifecycle energy cost
Monitoring added to any suitable system Operational visibility is needed Coverage, subscription, data and local fallback

Reliability with grid backup remains conditional on the supply, hardware and control sequence. Communication does not prevent water ingress or create more energy.

6. Procurement and acceptance

  • Obtain the load/energy calculation and the ordered component datasheets.
  • Agree the lighting study, wiring architecture, AC work and structural requirements.
  • Test low-energy events, outage, restoration and selected dimming modes.
  • Identify warranty scope, spare parts, connection costs and recurring platform charges.

7. FAQ

Does every rainy site need grid backup?

No. A standalone system may be appropriate if its load, solar recovery and reserve meet the project requirement.

Does annual rainfall determine autonomy?

No. Use local solar resource and weather sequence together with usable battery energy and the load profile.

Can hybrid use a smaller battery?

Possibly, when the supply and outage requirement justify it. The reserve must still cover the agreed loss-of-grid scenario.
