Several cloudy days can reduce the energy available to a solar street light. Whether it maintains the required output, dims or shuts down depends on the specific reserve, weather sequence and controller settings. Correct sizing supports a defined service scenario; it cannot promise unlimited operation without adequate energy input.
Define the service that must continue
Record the required night hours and measured input power at every approved dimming stage. Include controllers, communications and heating where fitted. A reserve statement should identify the maintained lighting service, battery condition and temperature, rather than simply counting days when some light remains visible.
Calculate usable storage
Nominal Wh are approximately nominal voltage multiplied by Ah. For illustration, a 25.6 V, 50 Ah pack stores 1,280 nominal Wh. With assumed allowable discharge of 80% and delivery efficiency of 90%, the initial load-side estimate is 922 Wh before additional temperature and ageing allowances. These are hypothetical calculation inputs, not a model guarantee.
Model the cloudy period and recovery
Compare generation with consumption over the relevant sequence of days and nights. If the illustrative usable reserve is 922 Wh and the measured nightly load is 300 Wh, it covers about three nights without generation before further allowances. Specify how the panel replenishes a depleted reserve while still supplying the following nights; a long-term average alone cannot validate every weather sequence.
Verify low-energy behaviour
Check BMS and controller limits, the allowed low-energy lighting profile and fault reporting. Protection may disconnect the load when available energy or voltage falls below a safe threshold. Do not bypass protection to extend a demonstration. Commission against a written scenario and investigate repeated early shutdowns through charging records and loaded measurements.

| Weather | Generation sequence and accumulated deficit |
| Recovery | Recharge period and protection behaviour |
Frequently asked questions
Will every solar light shut down after three cloudy days?
No. The result depends on storage, load, generation and the permitted operating profile.
Does a larger battery remove the risk?
It increases reserve only when compatible with the system. The panel must also restore the energy used.
Is dim light proof that the required service continues?
No. Verify the agreed lighting criteria and profile, not just whether the LEDs are visibly on.
