Judge a solar street light by whether the documented configuration delivers the required lighting and operating schedule at the site. Catalogue watts, chip brand and battery Ah alone cannot establish quality. The evidence must identify the actual model, components, settings and test conditions.

Verify lighting evidence first

Request the IES/LDT file for the complete luminaire and optic being offered. Confirm the model, electrical input and relevant test information. The photometric file describes the luminaire’s distribution; mounting height, spacing and road geometry belong in a separate layout simulation.

Use that simulation to compare maintained illuminance or luminance, uniformity, glare and spill against the agreed brief. A rural site does not automatically permit a lower service level. The relevant road or area requirements still apply.

Trace the energy calculation

Claim Evidence needed
Battery capacity Nominal voltage and Ah, pack model and documented capacity test
Overnight operation Measured schedule in Wh including auxiliaries
Reserve nights Usable storage, temperature, ageing, losses and weather assumptions
PV recharge Site-season resource, shading, losses and recovery period
Controller efficiency Defined measurement boundary and conditions

Compare nominal Wh rather than Ah across different battery voltages. Identify charge and discharge temperature limits separately and check BMS protection. A cycle count without its method cannot establish years of field life.

Inspect the complete product

Check identification, connectors, cable routing, seals, access and the match between the sample and bill of materials. Protection and mechanical reports should apply to the offered assembly. Review pole, panel and foundation calculations for local loads; a material grade or zinc thickness is not a structural rating.

Review report issuer, scope, date and model coverage. A management-system certificate does not replace product tests. Where laboratory accreditation is relevant, check the laboratory and its applicable scope rather than relying on a logo.

Agree a sample and batch acceptance plan

Define checks before ordering: component identity, power at every dimming stage, capacity-test method, charge behaviour and fault response. Conduct a representative nighttime lighting check and retain settings and measurement records.

A successful sample does not guarantee an unchanged production batch. Agree traceability, permitted substitutions, inspection sampling and change approval. Clarify warranty coverage, service parts and who pays labour and freight in a claim.

Use consistent pass/fail criteria across suppliers. The aim is evidence for the required service, not a competition for the largest unsupported power or autonomy number.

Frequently asked questions

Should I request a different IES file for every pole spacing?

No. Request the file for the exact luminaire and optic. Test different heights and spacings in the layout calculation.

Is a famous LED chip brand enough to prove light quality?

No. The complete luminaire optics, drive conditions, thermal design and measured performance matter.

What does a sample acceptance test establish?

It establishes the tested sample and configuration against the agreed criteria. Production traceability and batch acceptance are still needed.
