Configure a parking lot by separating vehicle aisles, parking bays, crossings and pedestrian routes. Establish the lighting requirements for each task, then calculate the energy needed to deliver them. Nominal LED wattage alone does not determine coverage, glare or overnight service.

Survey the lot before selecting equipment

Record dimensions, entrances, operating hours, accessible routes, nearby windows, trees, parked vehicle heights and possible pole locations. Check shading at the proposed panel position throughout the year. A panel above a clear aisle can still be shaded by a building in winter.

Use the exact luminaire and optic IES/LDT file in a layout calculation. Check the required maintained illuminance, uniformity and glare limits, together with light spill at the boundary. A mounting-height-to-spacing rule cannot replace that calculation.

Worked example: separate consumption, storage and generation

The following numbers illustrate a calculation only; they are not a recommended parking-lot specification. Assume one luminaire consumes a measured 40 W for five hours and 15 W for seven hours. A controller consumes 1 W throughout the 12-hour night.

  • Nightly load: 40 × 5 + 15 × 7 + 1 × 12 = 317 Wh.
  • For two nights without PV generation, load-side reserve is 634 Wh.
  • With an assumed 80% allowable discharge and 90% battery-to-load efficiency, nominal storage is at least 634 ÷ (0.8 × 0.9) = 881 Wh, before temperature and ageing allowances.
  • With an assumed design yield of 3 peak-sun-hours and a 0.75 PV-to-load factor, replacing one night’s consumption requires 317 ÷ (3 × 0.75) = 141 Wp.

The 141 Wp result does not include recovery of a depleted reserve. Specify the recovery period and add that recharge demand. Use a documented, consistent energy boundary so controller and conversion losses are not counted twice. Obtain site and seasonal yield inputs, for example from PVGIS, and check the actual shading and weather scenario.

Select an architecture and define acceptance

An integrated assembly may simplify installation, while a split assembly allows independent panel orientation and component access. Evaluate the particular product’s weight, wind area, mounting limits and maintenance procedure. Neither format automatically delivers more autonomy.

Acceptance item Evidence to request
Lighting Model-matched photometry, layout and site measurement plan
Energy Measured dimming loads, battery limits, seasonal yield and recovery calculation
Installation Pole, panel, foundation and fixing calculations for the site
Service Written warranty, replacement access and responsibility for labour

Commission a representative area before the main installation. Check actual power at every scheduled level, panel shading, low-battery behaviour and the agreed nighttime measurements. Warranty duration and coverage must come from the quotation and contract.

Frequently asked questions

Can I select parking lot lights by LED wattage?

No. Verify the actual luminaire photometry against the lot layout and lighting requirements, then calculate energy from its programmed input power.

Does two-night storage determine the required panel wattage?

No. Storage covers a defined reserve. Panel sizing must also replace daily consumption and restore depleted storage within the specified recovery period.

Is a five-year warranty standard for every project?

No universal term is assumed here. Obtain the applicable model warranty and clarify components, exclusions, labour, transport and claim handling in writing.
